ASQ EDMONTON QUALITY CONFERENCE - 2017
Quality in Canada - 150 Years
October 13, 2017
I took Mechanical Engineering Technology at NAIT and graduated in 1997. From there my first job was working in a gauge room performing measurements, gauge calibrations, and measurement training for Grant Prideco in Edmonton who manufactured Drill Stem and tubing for the oil and gas industry.
Two years later I took a job at a south side machine shop where I became the QA/QC Manager over the course of 5 years and was in charge of gauge calibrations, product measurement, NDT, liaison for quality related issues for customers and QMS maintenance. It was here that I got immersed in a more quality assurance role and my first ISO audit did not go well. From that moment it was recommended by the ISO auditor at the time, George Dickie that I take an internal auditor training course and quality wise life changed. It became clear what ISO was requiring and what I needed to do to help my company not only become ISO compliant but become more quality-minded. This was a great learning experience for me and has transcended into everything I have done quality wise since.
Performing at a high level in the most efficient way possible is the way I like to work and having the right reasons to do things well has made all the difference in every task set before me. But the most important characteristics I not only hold dear but also promote are those of a great attitude and integrity. It is these two items that I believe are transforming elements for a company not only trying to maintain a QMS that works but one that is growing. The people you work with need to know that you stand upon these principles because you model and encourage them and you want the people you work with to do the same. Once this type of attitude is created a team/family mentality is founded where we all want the same thing, a very happy customer because we provided a great quality product within the time specified. This only happens when we all have each other’s back and all feel responsible for own jobs and the jobs of the family we work with.
