The Quality and Business Excellence Award is a competition sponsored by ASQ Edmonton and open to businesses operating in Alberta. The aim of the competition is to promote a culture of Continuous Improvement in local industries.
ASQ Edmonton recognizes that improvement teams may operate under a number of different names:
- Quality Circles
- Six Sigma
- Operational Excellence
- TPM (Total Productive Maintenance)
These may exist in any industry, e.g., manufacturing, service, healthcare, energy, and others.
The competition consists of three stages.
Stage 1: Interested quality improvement teams submit applications and summaries of their improvement projects. The decision will be based on Competition Judging Criteria (please see Competition Judging Criteria).
Stage 2: The improvement teams submit Project Accomplishments Reports. The competition judges review the submissions and select a winner and a runner up.
Stage 3: Finalists are invited to present their projects at the ASQ Edmonton Quality Conference on October 13th 2017. Awards will be presented during the conference.

Competition Judging Criteria
Quality and Business Excellence Award Rules
The ASQ Edmonton Quality and Business Excellence Award is open to continuous improvement teams in Alberta. ASQ Edmonton recognizes that improvement teams may operate under a number of different names; Quality Circles, Six Sigma, Lean, Operational Excellence, TPM, and may exist in any industry, e.g., manufacturing, service, healthcare, energy, and other.
2. Application Process
To participate in the conference Quality Contest please Register and then submit a Project Accomplishments Report – Summary of the project with a 150 words abstract by 12:00 pm (noon) MST on Wednesday, September 13, 2017.
3. Judging Critera (see diagram above)
A Project Accomplishments Report should be submitted by September 13, 2017 to the following email address:
Subject: ASQ Edmonton Quality and Business Excellence Award 2017.
Your report should not exceed 15 pages. To help us better understand your project please include your company’s profile in the provided template. We will appreciate graphs, tables, diagrams, and photos in your report.
4. Selection / Notification of Finalists
Finalists will be selected by a judging panel of three ASQ Edmonton members based on the Judging Criteria posted on the ASQ Edmonton website (Appendix 1). All finalists will receive an e-mail notification by September 15, 2017.
5. Finalists Presentations
Finalists’ presentations will be held during the ASQ Edmonton Quality Conference on October 13, 2017, at the Chateau Lois Conference Centre, Edmonton. Finalists will be given 20 minutes to present their projects. Each company should be represented by 1-2 team members. The requirements for the presentations will be provided with an invitation to the conference.
6. Awards Presentation
The judging panel will select the award winners who will be named at the closing of the conference, after presentations by the finalists are made. Winners will be announced as gold and silver contest winners and certificates issued to all winning team members.
Any finalist team members may attend the contest presentation session without registering for the conference.
